Speaking at the <strong>India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 roadshow<\/strong> in Bengaluru, Pemmasani emphasized that the sector\u2019s capital intensity has naturally led to consolidation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cThe duopoly has not been created intentionally by anybody. Telecom requires massive capex,\u201d<\/em> he noted, highlighting how Reliance Jio and Airtel\u2019s ability to deploy significant capital allowed them to roll out services nationwide. <em>\u201cBecause of them, we were able to achieve the fastest 5G rollout in the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the current market structure, Pemmasani stressed that the government does not envision a two-player market. <em>\u201cWe need four to five telecom companies,\u201d<\/em> he said. To that end, the government converted nearly <strong>\u20b936,000 crore of Vodafone Idea\u2019s dues into equity<\/strong>, though the company continues to face challenges and regularly seeks support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BSNL Revival and Homegrown Tech<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister reiterated the commitment to revive <strong>Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL)<\/strong> as part of a broader push for indigenous technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cBSNL\u2019s revival is taking longer because we are also focused on building homegrown solutions. But eventually, BSNL will become a strong alternative,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India Eyes Leadership in 6G<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking ahead, India is determined not to miss out on shaping the next generation of telecom standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWith 2G, 3G, 4G, and even 5G, India was not part of the global standard-setting process. But with 6G, we\u2019ve already contributed to about 10% of the global standards and filed over 200 patents,\u201d<\/em> Pemmasani shared.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Globally, countries like China and the US aim to roll out 6G by 2030, and India plans to launch services in parallel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Connectivity Milestones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With <strong>1.2 billion mobile subscribers<\/strong>, <strong>1 billion broadband users<\/strong>, and over <strong>2.2 lakh villages connected via BharatNet<\/strong>, India has made significant progress in bridging the digital divide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe are investing an additional $18 billion to connect 40,000 more gram panchayats and 1.5 crore rural households with high-speed internet,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also highlighted India\u2019s transformation into a manufacturing hub: <em>\u201cFrom importing 75% of our mobile devices, we are now exporting \u20b91.8 trillion worth of devices annually.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Supporting Startups and Tackling AI Risks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the <strong>Telecom Technology Development Fund<\/strong>, nearly \u20b9500 crore has been deployed to support 120 high-tech startups. Pemmasani acknowledged that emerging technologies like AI will be both transformational and challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cAI can enable fraud, but it can also empower citizens.
